Project Selection

Partnering with SDSU’s Sage Project, you’ll work with real data on community-based projects. Project range from understanding community concerns, analyzing environmental assessments, to studying air quality and more.

Each project will support larger research initiatives where you can meaningful contribute local environmental and social impact research.

Program Structure

Complementing your service-learning project, we provide data skills workshops focusing on a different data skill each week as well as attend the Building a STEM Career workshops, a professional development workshop series. These workshops are designed to gradually build your technical expertise, covering essential tools and techniques needed in data analysis and visualization, and bridge information gaps in STEM careers

Depending on your cohort selection, expected wait time is 3–6 months before beginning the program

Common Questions

Before you begin the application, please review the eligibility guidelines for the Impacting Communities Through Data Program. The program is intended for individuals who meet the following criteria:

You have served in the U.S. military
You are a beginner in data analysis and data visualization
You have separated from the military. To be eligible, participants need to be separated from the military before beginning the program. See the program application for more details
You are currently based in San Diego County, Orange County, Riverside County, or Imperial County in California

Data Elevates does not provide laptops or loaner devices for program participants.

To participate in this program, you'll need access to a computer, laptop, or other device capable of running Excel and Tableau. Below is a list of organizations that offer low or no-cost computers:

Tech for Troops: Veterans can apply to get a low-cost computer to keep, i.e., this is not a laptop loan
San Diego Futures Foundation: Another resource where veterans can apply to get a low-cost computer to keep, i.e., this is not a laptop loan
San Diego Public Library: Anyone can rent out a laptop for free and will need to return it on a certain date
Heroes Deserve Help: Veterans can apply to rent out a laptop for free and will need to return it after completing the ICTD program
